To kick start our weekend, as we set off Friday we had a ‘free’ day, or so we thought. Traffic decided on different matters, and boy oh boy the weather, all kyboshed most plans. Didn’t manage to do all we wanted, as time was against us, but we did a first for us, and that’s visit West Kennet Long Barrow.
What is West Kennet I here you ask, well it’s one of the largest, and most accessible Neolithic chambered tombs in Britain. Believed to have been built in around 3650 BC, it was used for a short time as a burial chamber, and nearly 50 people have been buried here before the chambers were blocked. It’s now part of the Avebury World Heritage Site.
West Kennet Long Barrow is in private ownership and in English Heritage guardianship. It is managed by The National Trust on behalf of English Heritage, and the two organisations share the cost of managing and maintaining the property. Probably constructed in the thirty-seventh century BC, during Britain’s Early Neolithic period, today it survives in a partially reconstructed state.

Weather was super unsettled, whipping rain howling winds and we were shattered. So rather than carrying on with a visit around Avebury Stone Circle like we had planned, we decided to find our accommodation and have some food, and get warmed up.
