Hipster

Hippie girl, going through recovery, and life. Follow my journey of Spiritual growth and health.

I gave the hospital a ring to ask if there was any dates, and to my shock they said yes!! And it’s for 2 weeks time. So while I’m scared, terrified in fact, I’m also feeling mindful that I want this, and it’s better to do it while it’s the dark months and not into our camping season. I went through so many emotions in that moment, discussed it with Mr Moon, weighed up pros and cons, settled on it, hell even kinda looked forward to it.

But then the very next day it was cancelled, due to the New Consultant wanting to meet me first, and fitting in a Pre Op date too. So although now not in 2 weeks time, it should be within the next 6 weeks. Once more you are flooded with emotions, from crushing disappointment, to feeling ok, I can work with this and maybe get things more prepared, both mentality, physically and importantly 8 can finish my 30 days of Yoga with Adriene first 🤪

So a fusion it is, this has been chosen by the Royal Orthopaedic Team as my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome they feel means the tendons and ligaments are too lax, so unlikely to be successful if they have chosen that treatment. So what is a Fusion?? Well it’s a surgery to ‘weld’ your bones together, simply put.

If you have severe arthritis pain, your doctor may suggest that you have joint fusion surgery (also called “arthrodesis”). This procedure fuses, or “welds,” together the two bones that make up your aching joint.

It causes the bones to become one solid bone, and it can lessen your pain. It can also make your joint more stable and help you bear more weight on it.

I have Eds so both the CMC and MCP joints are collapsing, and grinding.

I don’t know if it’s a simple pin through the bones, or a plate with screws or even screws and wire, which ever it is, they will stay in permanently. I’m looking at perhaps a cast or splint for 6 weeks. Then I can start physiotherapy.

So now I’m researching everything I can, and try and get myself mentally and physically prepared for recovery. It’s a shame my other hand is desperately needing doing too, but it at least tolerates the steroid injections better, so perhaps after my surgery, I can see if Micats can see me asap for that treatment. Hard to do that hand while I use a walking stick or pole.

Planning the Left hand first. This is how it looks at the moment. Knuckles often swell, and MCP slips as much as the CMC. Let’s hope time goes by quickly.
