A BRAND-NEW CRIME THRILLER SET IN YORKSHIRE FROM BESTSELLING AUTHOR EMMY ELLIS.

A killer who feeds his victims to the pigs.
A woman who finds her boyfriend’s head in her front garden.
A strait-laced detective who’s attracted to a shady gang member.
Carys Brignell is a young, divorced woman in her thirties. She owns a lovely home in Bishop’s Lock — a perk from her divorce settlement — and has a vibrant social life.
One morning Carys opens her bedroom curtains and sees a head on a spike in the front garden. It’s Nigel, her new boyfriend.
Detective Inspector Anna James is assigned to the case. She quickly learns that fun-loving Carys is a habitual liar and serial bed-hopper. She spends most of her evenings in her local pub flirting with young men, including roguish Joshua ‘Parole’ Cribbins, a member of crime syndicate the Northern Kings.
Then another head is found on a spike on the edge of a field. And this time Anna knows the victim . . .
Someone is targeting male associates of Carys — and ‘Parole’ could be next.
Anna wants to warn him. She’s not sure if it’s out of duty or because she fancies him. But getting involved with ‘Parole’ is a risky game to play.
Then Anna makes a breakthrough in the case that leads her to a farm on the outskirts of town. When she sees the pig pen, the penny drops: the killer is feeding the victim’s bodies to the pigs. What she can’t understand is why?
This utterly gripping crime thriller is perfect for fans of Martina Cole, Angela Marsons, Helen H. Durrant and Charlie Gallagher.
READERS LOVE EMMY ELLIS:
THE DETECTIVE
DI Anna James is balanced, level-headed and diligent. Her colleagues joke that she can be blunt and to the point, but in her line of work, that helps her get results. She went into the police force because she loves the Famous Five and Scooby Doo — the idea of solving crimes for a living was thrilling! Her home is as immaculate as her desk, preferring to keep things minimal so there’s less things to dust and tidy. She’s single and in her forties. She doesn’t like going on nights out and prefers to stay at home and read.

My Review This is a book that takes liberties on real life, like the police officer being attracted to a gang member, would that really happen? Would the police accept an ex gang member into their ranks? I’m unsure, but it wasn’t too wild in its plot. Now piggies have always scared me and have been subject to real life crimes, such as the most famous one, Pickton farm See here so adding the pigs to devour the bodies was genius and was extra creepy. As a crime reader mostly, the one thing I enjoy most is trying to guess along the way, but this book actually reveals the killer immediately. But this is done in a way that the killers and police stories are intertwined and pan out side by side, which totally works for this book. If you want gruesome murders, scary farm animals, crime syndicates, shady folk, lairs and causal sex all mixed into one, you get this book. I think I need to read more by Emmy Ellis to see how these characters develop as there is a running undercurrent story that connects then, and I would love to see how they unfold over time. So while not the best book overall, it was easier lighter reading than the blurb makes you imagine (is it has a couple of gruesome parts, but that’s not prolonged. And I enjoyed reading it. Idbe back for more too.
