Winter walks in new areas has been the aim this month, and after recently discovering potential walks in a woodland, we went to explore.
Its a super flat path, with benches periodically to sit down on, and lots of waterways to gaze at. Apparently its the best place to spot a kingfisher!! I’ll be testing that in the Spring.

The Chained Oak The Chained Oak is a famous, ancient oak tree in Dimmingsdale, Staffordshire, near Alton Towers, known for the legend that a curse led to its chains, preventing falling branches from killing family members of the Earl of Shrewsbury, a story inspiring the theme park’s “Hex” ride, though the tree is now partially collapsed, with some branches even growing into the rusted chains.
The Legend
The Curse: A beggar woman cursed the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury after he rudely dismissed her, stating a family member would die for every branch that fell from the oak.
The Incident: A violent storm caused a large branch to fall, and shortly after, a member of the Earl’s family died, seemingly fulfilling the curse.
The Chains: The terrified Earl ordered heavy chains wrapped around the tree’s branches to prevent any more from falling, hoping to stop the deaths.
