Finally we have managed to visit Abbots Bromley Horn Dance again. We last did it in 2022. See Here

The Abbots Bromley Horn Dance is one of the oldest surviving rural customs in the UK, attracting visitors from across the country and around the world. The spectacle takes place annually on Wakes Monday — the Monday following the first Sunday after 4 September — meaning in 2026 it is expected on Monday 7 September (date can vary slightly).

Beginning early in the morning at St Nicholas’ Church, the dancers collect ancient reindeer antlers, believed to date back centuries, before setting off on a dramatic procession through the village and surrounding parish.

What Makes the Horn Dance So Special
Historic Folk Procession – Follow the dancers as six “deer-men” carry impressive reindeer antlers, joined by colourful characters including a Hobby Horse, Maid Marian, a Fool, a Bowman and musicians.

Scenic Route & All-Day Event – The procession follows a traditional route around Abbots Bromley and beyond, with stops at farms, pubs and landmarks before returning in the evening to the church to place the horns to rest.

Living Folklore & Heritage – This ancient dance is thought to date back around 800 years and remains a vibrant celebration of rural history and community spirit.

We watched and walked along with the Deer Men and watched the Morris Dancers and ate the best cupcakes I’ve ever had.

It is lovely to hear you made it back to Abbots Bromley. The detail about the six deer-men carrying ancient reindeer antlers really captures the weight of that tradition. I have always found the mix of the Hobby Horse and the Bowman fascinating, especially how they move through the village. For those of us with stiff knees, watching a long procession like this can be a gentle reminder to keep moving slowly rather than rushing. The fact that it starts at St Nicholas’ Church and winds through the parish makes for a lovely, low-impact way to spend a day. It is rare to see such old customs kept alive with so much care. I hope the weather was kind to you all this time around.

Sounds like the sunshine really helped the Horn Dance shine, especially with the antler‑carrying deer‑men moving so deliberately. When the sky stays clear, the colors of the hobby horse and the bowman’s costume stand out in a way that makes the whole tradition feel even more vivid.

Seeing you agree that it sure does make everything stand out makes me think of how the bright light highlights the physical effort of the performance. Carrying those heavy antlers requires incredible balance and core stability to maintain such a slow, deliberate pace without straining. It is amazing how they make it look so effortless.

They do this from 7am until 7pm it’s amazing as they are extremely heavy too. They are the original antlers too so over 800yrs old

Working twelve hours straight with antlers that are centuries old is astonishing. The fact they keep a steady, deliberate pace from 7 am to 7 pm suggests they must subtly shift their weight and use micro‑rests between steps to avoid fatigue, especially given the antlers’ massive, ancient weight.

Absolutely true. The steady rhythm from 7 am to 7 pm also hints at a subtle counterbalance strategy: each step likely shifts the center of mass slightly forward, allowing the antlers to glide rather than lift, reducing joint strain over the long duration.
