Holy moly its really been 5yrs?? Bitter sweet date as this then makes me realise its also 5yrs since we lost our loved one. Literally a week apart 😭💔

I have an upcoming appointment with my consultant as I’m still under a yearly check. Plus I would love to pick his brain about my ongoing knee issues and whether it is affects the hip itself. And maybe if he knows someone I should see for the knee. Mri appointment still hasn’t appeared.

Little update on granddaughter, she is doing well. Bit frustrated not being able to move now pain is easing off. Its been nearly 1 month so almost half way.

Her parents have jazzed up the spica cast.

I have fell off the wagon on exercising as life has been busy. Or we just haven’t been at home either.

We did bike ride on electric bikes though. Can I just say how painful the whole ordeal was. The swinging of the leg over the bar. The hands on the handle bars and shoulders too. Knee hated every second of it. However it was good mentally and I will do it again.

Also been doing gardening in small bits and pieces and we are finally getting some furniture for our dining room. But I do need to carve out time for physio.

This is what we have bought to house my books

Poor grandbaby in a cast! It looks like spica casts have high success rate though, and I wish her well.

Your ebikes look great and that’s a beautiful trail. Old man rich doesn’t do too well getting on a bike with stiff hips either, I actually lay mine on the ground, step over it and pick it back up.

Knee trouble showing up on the same side as a hip replacement is common enough that it is worth walking in with that question already framed. The two usual suspects are a small leg length difference after the surgery and weakness in the muscles on the side of the hip, because when the pelvis drops slightly on each step the knee takes the angle instead. Your consultant can check both in about two minutes if you ask. On falling off the wagon, five minutes most days beats an hour once a week for exactly this kind of thing, and the bar really is that low. The bike ride sounds like the leg swing was the hard part rather than the pedalling, which tells you something useful about where the range is still tight.

Thank you for this reply definitely food for thought as I don have a 2.5inch leg length difference

Glad it helped, especially since you’ve ruled out a 2.5‑inch leg‑length discrepancy. One thing to watch is the timing of hip abductor activation; if it lags even a fraction of a second, the knee can absorb the drop and feel stiff later in the day.

You are very welcome. It is a common misconception that hip abductor weakness is the only culprit for knee stiffness. Often, the issue is simply a timing mismatch where the muscles fire too late to stabilize the joint during weight transfer. If you notice your knee feeling tight after long periods of standing, try consciously engaging those hip muscles a beat earlier when you shift your weight. That small adjustment can significantly reduce the compensatory strain on the knee.

You’re very welcome, I’m glad you found that valuable.

It’s often the subtle adjustments that make the biggest difference in long-term comfort after a hip replacement. Even small improvements in muscle timing can significantly reduce daily wear and tear on other joints.
